Course Summary

The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association desires to offer training opportunities designed to give law enforcement officers an overview of current leadership practices used in 21st Century Policing.  These practices include a need to understand cultural differences, to promote ethical leadership principles, conduct a personality self-assessment for better understanding of yourself and others, understand the importance of communication and facing the challenges of becoming a first time supervisor.    This course is designed for aspiring law enforcement leaders but will also be helpful as a refresher for current supervisors.

This is a six credit post approved training session.

 

Learning Objectives

  1. Course attendees will learn about differences and cultural competence
  2. Course attendees will gain insight into promotional assessments and how to prepare for them
  3. Course attendees will learn about the importance of communication
  4. Course attendees will learn about the importance of wellness in an organization
  5. Course attendees will learn about PTSD and its impact on law enforcement officers
  6. Course attendees will learn about the dynamics of becoming a new supervisor
  7. Course attendees will learn about the importance of ethics and ethical behavior in law enforcement and especially as a supervisor

 

Session 1:  Culturally Competent Leadership/Promotional Assessments – 8:30 am to 10:00 am

Today’s law enforcement leaders require a greater understanding of cultural differences that exist in our communities and how to recognize and use that understanding to better serve in the 21st Century.    Law enforcement agencies also are utilizing increasingly sophisticated assessment processes to help select our future leaders.   The instructors will give insight on how to approach and prepare for these assessments.  
                       

Session 2:  Communication Skills for Today’s Law Enforcement Leaders – 10:15 am to 11:15 am
Chief Stephanie Revering – Crystal Police Department        

Chief Revering will emphasize and highlight the critical need for communication skills as a leader in law enforcement.  Those skills include verbal and written communications as well as the ability to lead and direct in support of the Agency’s Mission and Goals through those communication techniques.

Session 3:  Creating a Culture of Wellness -  11:45 am to 12:15 pm

Chief Mike Goldstein – Plymouth Department of Public Safety

Chief Goldstein will talk about the culture of Wellness for the City of Plymouth including physical wellness. Chief Goldstein will give an overview of the importance to establish a Wellness program and what you can do to help foster a healthy culture in your Organization.

Session 4:  Shots Fired, Lessons Learned – 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm    

Chief Tim Fournier – New Hope Police Department

Chief Fournier will discuss the events surrounding the shooting at a New Hope City Council meeting.  Chief Fournier will also review the lessons learned from the response, investigation, and issues surrounding the recovery from this significant event which included the death of the suspect and non-fatal wounding of two officers.

Session 5:  The Things I wish I Knew Before Becoming a Supervisor – 1:20 pm to 2:50 pm

Major Sean Meagher- MN State Patrol

Major Meagher will share his leadership lessons learned in his career with the MN State Patrol.  Major Meagher’s training will approach the these lessons and training from a new supervisor perspective sharing successes and challenges faced universally by new supervisors.  

Session 6 – 5 Ethical Standards of Policing – 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Chief Paul Schnell – Inver Grove Heights Police Department

Ethics and high ethical standards are the foundation for all members of law enforcement especially those tasked with leading others.  Chief Schnell will review five ethical standards of policing including how those standards lead to a successful career and how they can become the foundation for a culture of high ethics in every Agency.
